5 Home Maintenance Tasks You Don't Want to Ignore

Routine maintenance is crucial for a healthy, trouble-free home. Though it can be easy to overlook basic home maintenance, doing so could end up costing you down the road. Here are some important home maintenance tasks you don't want to ignore.

Cleaning the gutters

De-clogging the gutters is a vital home maintenance task that's often overlooked. Gutters collect and divert water away from the home's roof and foundation. Gutters clogged with leaves, dirt and debris can’t function properly and may result in roof leaks, rotten fascia boards, and foundation damage. To clean your gutters, remove the debris and use a garden hose to wash away any residue. Also ensure the gutters are positioned correctly for proper drainage. TAMKO Building Products recommends cleaning your gutters at least twice a year.

Changing HVAC filters

Another maintenance task that many ignore is changing the HVAC filters. Dirty filters put more stress on your HVAC system and hinder its efficiency. They force your system to work harder to keep you warm or cool. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says homeowners should check their filters monthly and replace any that are worn or dirty. Filters should be replaced at least every three months.

Checking for leaks

Even the smallest leaks will turn into a major problem if ignored. Leaks often signify a larger problem and can result in warping, mold, mildew and water damage. Routinely examine your home's pipes and plumbing for leaks, and get any issues resolved right away. The same goes for your roof. Periodically check the attic for signs of leaks and water stains.

Dusting your refrigerator fan and coils

When's the last time you dusted your refrigerator fan and condenser coils? Similar to your HVAC system, a dirty fan and coils must work harder to keep your food cold. A dusty fan and coils require more energy to function, which increases your monthly bill and exerts more stress on the system. Cleaning the fan and coils will increase their efficiency and prolong the life of your refrigerator.

Trimming tree branches

Don’t let the tree branches on your property run wild. Keep your tree branches tidy and trim to prevent them from getting too close to your roof. A heavy gust of wind or storm could cause nearby or overhanging branches to fall on your roof, resulting in damage.

These are five home maintenance tasks you don't want to ignore. Keep up with these and other basic maintenance tasks to maintain a healthy and efficient home.
