Three Ways Your Roof Can Get Damaged in the Summer

While winter is associated with snowstorms and ice dams, summer also brings its own hazards that can cause damage to your roof. As a homeowner, it's important to understand these potential risks so you can address and repair damage if and when it does occur. Ignoring roof damage, no matter how minor, can lead to a costly repair or even full roof replacement. Here are some things to keep an eye out for in the summertime:

Sunlight

Sunshine is one of the things we love most about summertime, but it can be bad for your roof. Your roof is directly exposed to the sun's UV rays. If you have an asphalt roof, the shingles granules are designed to protect the shingles from UV damage. However, over time, the granules may start to deteriorate or fall off, leaving your shingles exposed. Examine your shingles to insure they're in good condition and that the granules are still intact. If the shingles are losing granules, you may come across them in your lawn or rain gutters.

Trees

Though they provide beauty and shade, the trees surrounding your home can become dangerous when bad weather hits. A wind storm can cause tree branches and leaves to fall on your roof. If not removed, they can hold moisture, resulting in mold and mildew that can deteriorate your shingles. Heavy branches falling on your roof can also rip and dislodge the shingles, exposing your roof. Cut any branches that hang over or too close to your roof.

Lightning Storms

Lightning storms are quite common during summer, and they can damage your roof. Lightning can strike your roof directly or hit trees and other objects near your house, causing them to fall. And, these storms are often accompanied by hail, which can dent, tear and puncture the shingles. TAMKO Building Products recommends inspecting your roof after every big storm event to address any potential damage.
